Understanding Your Coverage: Vision vs. Medical

Many patients are surprised to learn that they actually have two different types of insurance that cover their eyes. Depending on the reason for your visit, we may bill one or the other.

Vision Insurance

Think of this as a "Wellness Benefit." It is designed to lower your out-of-pocket costs for routine care.

What it covers: Routine eye exams, glitch-free vision testing, and allowances for prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses.

When we use it: When you are coming in for a yearly check-up and do not have any underlying medical eye conditions.

Medical Insurance

This covers the health of the eye itself, similar to how you visit a primary care doctor for a physical ailment.

What it covers: Diagnosis, management, and treatment of eye diseases or injuries.

When we use it: If you are visiting us for conditions like dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, eye infections (pink eye), or complications from diabetes/high blood pressure.

Our Recommendation

If you have both types of insurance, please bring both cards to your appointment. Our experts will ensure we coordinate your benefits correctly to minimize your out-of-pocket expenses.
